Black History Essay Contest

Registration for the 2025 Black History Month Essay Contest is closed. 

Registered Participants should:

• RSVP for the celebratory brunch by February 8, 2025

Essay Topic:

When you registered, you selected an essay topic to explore out of the following options:

• Monk Estill

• Mary E. Merritt

• Middletown Consolidated School

• Black Settlements of Madison County (Farristown, Bobtown, Middletown, or Peytontown)

To support how you approach your essay, you may also use one of the following prompts to explore your chosen topic: 

• "A Hero from Madison County: Past and Present"
  Throughout history, Black individuals from Madison County have made significant contributions to the community. Choose a Black historical figure from Madison County and explain how their legacy is still relevant today. How can their actions or beliefs inspire us to create a more inclusive and welcoming community for everyone.

• "The Power of Unity: How Black History Shapes Our Future"
  In what ways can the struggles and successes of Black individuals in Madison County help us understand the importance of inclusivity today? Choose a local Black Settlement of Madison County whose history represents unity, resilience, and hope. How can their example guide us in fostering inclusion and understanding in our schools and neighborhoods?

• "Lessons in Leadership: Black Figures Who Paved the Way"
  Black leaders in Madison County have been at the forefront of important social and cultural changes. Think about one leader from Madison County who made a difference in their community. How did their leadership contribute to inclusivity and fairness, and what can we learn from their example to continue their work in our own community?

• "Building a More Inclusive Tomorrow"
  In our modern world, inclusivity means making sure that everyone feels valued, respected, and heard. Reflect on a Black figure, organization, or settlement from Madison County, past or present, who worked toward creating a more inclusive environment. How can their contributions inspire you and others to promote inclusivity in today’s world, especially in your school and local community?

Submission Guidelines:

To be eligible for one of the top 3 prizes, your essay must meet these requirements: 

• Essays must be typed in 12 pt, Times New Roman font

• Essays should be between 500 and 800 words in length

• Please include your name, school, and grade level at the top of your essay

• All essay submissions should be sent via email to ourlandofpromise.heritage@gmail.com by February 8, 2025
